Abstract

With the participation of Eulàlia Bonet, Hagit Borer and David Embick, the panel discussion “Grammar Architecture: morphology and the relevant interfaces”, promoted by the Abralin Morphology Commission, focuses on word formation and its interaction to phonology and syntax.

Eulàlia Bonet reviews and illustrates three cases in which a given phonological configuration has an impact on morpheme realization and non-realization.

Hagit Borer investigates if – and how – acategorial Roots serve as input to Merge particularly focusing on the interaction between roots and Merge in the context of argument structure and complex words.

David Embick discusses how Roots enter syntactic structures, and whether or not they have phrasal structure, proposing that certain objects, although built syntactically, are complex heads without internal phrasal structure.

About Abralin Ao Vivo

The coronavirus pandemic has reshaped many of our academic practices. At this time, social distance is still an important and necessary measure. However, the exchange of ideas within the linguistic community has to be maintained. With this in mind, the Brazilian Linguistics Association, Abralin, in cooperation with CIPL – Comité International Permanent des Linguistes, ALFAL – Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de América Latina, SAEL – Sociedad Argentina de Estudios Lingüísticos, AILA – Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée, LSA – Linguistic Society of America, LAGB – Linguistics Association of Great Britain, SLE – Societas Linguistica Europaea, ALS – Australian Linguistic Society, BAAL – British Association for Applied Linguistics and SEL – Sociedad Española de Lingüística organised a virtual event: Abralin ao Vivo – Linguists Online. The event had a daily schedule of lectures and panel session with distinguished linguists from all over the world and from all subdisciplines.

Due to its huge success, the event became a regular series. The purpose of the series Abralin ao Vivo – Linguists Online is to give students and researchers free access to state-of-the-art discussions on the most diverse topics related to the study of human language. All the activities are broadcast online here, an open and interactive platform. The broadcasts are freely available for later access as well.
